Why competitors show in Ads Transparency but not in Auction Insights

A client sends you a screenshot from Google's Ads Transparency Center. "This competitor is running ads. Why are they not in our Auction Insights?" Fair question, and there is usually a good answer.

The two reports measure different things. Ads Transparency shows ads that exist. Auction Insights shows advertisers you actually collided with in a live auction. A competitor can be extremely busy and still never meet you.

Here is what is usually going on, in rough order of likelihood.

01You never shared an auction

Auction Insights is overlap based. If they bid on different keywords, match types, locations, hours or devices, there is nothing to report. They are advertising. They are not competing with you.

02You were not in the auction

If you are budget capped and stop serving at 2pm, or lost impression share (rank) is high, or your own negatives excluded the query, Google records no overlap. Check both lost IS figures first: high numbers mean auctions are happening without you.

03Minimum activity threshold

Google only lists participants above a volume threshold, and the on-screen table truncates. A competitor who shows on three of your four hundred keywords disappears at campaign level. Drop to ad group or keyword level and they reappear.

04The wrong date range

Ads Transparency shows a rolling window with a "last shown" date attached. Plenty of the ads people find there stopped weeks ago, or ran for four days as a test.

05The wrong campaign type

Auction Insights covers Search and Shopping only. If their spend is Display, Demand Gen or YouTube they will never appear, so check what format the transparency ads actually are. And if you only run Performance Max, you get no report at all.

06They are there under a different name

Auction Insights groups by display URL domain. Subsidiary brands, .com against .co.uk, affiliates and agency microsites all appear as rows you might not connect to them.

07Geography

Ads Transparency filters by country. A UK advertiser could be running London only while your client targets Manchester. At country level that looks like a match. At auction level it is not.

What to do about it

Download the Auction Insights report rather than reading the on-screen table, run it at keyword level across thirty to ninety days, and check Search and Shopping separately.

If they still do not appear, the honest read is that they are advertising somewhere else, not beating you. Worth saying plainly, because "competitor X is running ads" gets used to justify a budget increase far more often than the data supports.
